Practical, expert physio for a growing, developing baby
Plagiocephaly, often called “flat head syndrome,” describes a change in the shape of a baby’s head due to consistent pressure on one area. While it does not affect brain development, it can impact a baby’s posture, head control, and symmetry of movement. At PaedsPhysio, we offer specialist advice and physiotherapy to help guide your baby’s head shape and support strong, balanced motor control in those important early months.
WHAT IS PLAGIOCEPHALY?
What is Plagiocephaly?
Why head shape matters for early development
Why head shape matters for early development.
Plagiocephaly refers to flattening on one side of the back of the head, often giving the head a parallelogram appearance. This flattening happens when babies repeatedly rest in the same position, especially during sleep or time spent in car seats, bouncers, or prams. Sometimes, tightness in the neck muscles (such as from torticollis) limits head movement and contributes to the problem.
Premature babies, whose skulls are softer, can also be more at risk. We recognise that a baby’s developing movement patterns and head shape are closely linked. Our children’s physiotherapists provide thorough assessments and clear advice to help families make simple changes that can have a big impact.
Common causes of plagiocephaly include:
Consistent resting position, especially on the back.
Tight neck muscles limiting head turning (torticollis).
In-utero positioning or birth factors.
Prematurity and softer skull bones.
