Specialist support tailored to your child’s needs

Specialist support tailored to your child’s needs

Amputee physiotherapy is a specialised area of physiotherapy that supports children who have had a limb amputated or were born with a limb difference. It plays a vital role in recovery, rehabilitation, and long-term development, helping children adapt physically and emotionally as they grow.

At PaedsPhysio, our team understands the unique challenges that limb loss can bring for children and their families, combining expert rehabilitation with a supportive, child-focused approach. We guide families through post-operative care, prosthetic use, strength and mobility development, and everything in between. Our goal is to help your child be as independent, confident and active as possible at every stage of their journey.

Children who may benefit from amputee physiotherapy might experience:

  • Reduced balance and coordination.
  • Difficulty learning to use a prosthesis.
  • Fatigue or pain.
  • Fear or anxiety about movement or activity.
  • Muscle weakness or postural imbalances.
  • Challenges participating in play, school or sport.

WHAT IS AMPUTEE PHYSIOTHERAPY?
How pre-amputation physiotherapy can help

Where possible, pre-amputation physiotherapy can play an important role in preparing your child for surgery, both physically and emotionally

This may involve strength and mobility exercises, education around what to expect, and practical strategies to help your child stay active and engaged throughout their recovery.

Following amputation, prosthetic training becomes an essential part of rehabilitation for many. We take the time to help children become confident and comfortable using their prosthesis in daily life, school, and play. For children who do not use a prosthesis, or use it only part of the time, non-prosthetic rehabilitation focuses on maximising function with their natural movement.
