Specialist Physiotherapy for Rett Syndrome

Helping your child to move, play, and reach their potential

Rett syndrome is a rare and complex neurological condition that can affect every aspect of a child’s development. Although early milestones may appear typical, children usually experience a gradual loss of skills from around 6 to 18 months of age. At PaedsPhysio, we understand how overwhelming this can feel for families, and we are here with skilled support. Our experienced children’s physiotherapists work closely with families to help each child maintain their movement, comfort, and engagement with the world around them.

Understanding the impact of Rett syndrome

Rett syndrome is a genetic disorder which most commonly affects girls. After a period of apparently normal development, children start to lose skills they had previously mastered, including speech, hand use, and motor abilities. Repetitive hand movements, difficulties with walking, breathing irregularities, seizures, and scoliosis are common challenges faced by families.
At PaedsPhysio, we know that no two experiences with Rett syndrome are the same. Our team takes the time to understand your child’s unique strengths and needs, working alongside you to create a supportive and practical physiotherapy plan. We focus on maintaining mobility, reducing secondary complications, and enabling every child to live life as fully as possible, all while providing reassurance and clear advice to families.
  • Loss of hand function, often with repetitive movements such as wringing or clapping.
  • Loss of verbal communication, relying more on eye gaze and gestures.
  • Difficulties with walking, standing, and independent movement.
  • Increased risk of developing scoliosis (curvature of the spine).
  • Breathing irregularities, such as breath-holding or hyperventilation.
