WHAT IS SPINAL MUSCULAR ATROPHY (SMA)?

What is Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA)?

Understanding SMA

Spinal Muscular Atrophy is a rare genetic neuromuscular condition that affects the motor neurons in the spinal cord. It leads to progressive muscle weakness and loss of movement due to muscle wasting. While it doesn’t affect intelligence, it can impact a child’s ability to move, breathe, and eat depending on the severity. SMA is classified from Type 1 (severe) to Type 4 (milder, adult-onset).

How We Help Children With SMA

At PaedsPhysio, we work with babies with significant early challenges, through to older children navigating mobility changes

Our physiotherapists are experienced in supporting children across the Spinal Muscular Atrophy spectrum. We take time to understand each child’s needs and work closely with families to create a supportive, realistic physiotherapy plan that evolves with your child. Whether aiming to build strength, manage postural needs, or provide respiratory support, we’re here to help every step of the way.

Children with SMA may experience:

  • Muscle weakness and reduced mobility.
  • Delayed or limited gross motor development.
  • Difficulty with posture and spinal alignment (e.g. scoliosis).
  • Muscle tightness.
  • Fatigue with movement and daily activities.
  • Challenges with breathing, coughing, or swallowing.
Specialist, Adaptable Support for Your Child’s Journey

Physiotherapy plays a key role in helping children with SMA stay as mobile, active and comfortable as possible

Our approach is practical and supportive. We tailor sessions to each child’s needs, from early postural support and stretching to respiratory care and adapted physical activity. We aim to promote movement, reduce the risk of complications, and make physio feel positive and achievable.
